9-11 Whitman

Joseph O'Neill laat zijn roman Netherland voorafgaan door een citaat van Walt Whitman:

I dream'd in a dream, I saw a city invincible to
the attacks of the whole of the rest of the earth;
I dream'd that was the new City of Friends

Anders dan de flaptekst doet vermoeden is Netherland niet echt een post-9-11 roman, al speelt het verhaal zich grotendeels wel in het New York van na die datum af. Een van de twee andere na-11-september-romans die ik las (naast Extremely loud and incredibly close van Jonathan Safran Foer), Specimen Days van Michael Cunningham, is doordrenkt met Walt Whitman. Het motto:

Fear not O Muse! truly new ways and days receive, surround you,
I candidly confess a queer, queer race, of novel fashion,
And yet the same old human race, the same within, without,
